Text written in cursive reads : example - from Jefferson Elementary circa 1978 After a week or so, Leo returned to school. Still scrawny and short compared to the rest of us. He still spit when he talked. He still had crusty eyes and glasses too big and crooked on his face. This time he wore a thin sock on his head; a cap from the hospital.- to keep his stitches clean he said as he enacted the story of his step-father kicking his head in. He spoke to us first graders in the lunch line as if he was Shakespeare performing a soliloquy for the ages. The rest of the year the lunch ladies slipped him an extra milk or large portions. I remember I gave him my grapes once and often my oranges. But I did not know how to be his friend. How to pick him first for kickball. Now I an an old woman with almost grown children of my own. And I keep Leo in my heart as one of my family. I remember him just as he was strong and wanting a friend.
